Luxembourg’s music ecosystem: the people and organisations connecting creation, production, distribution and transmission. Graphic design: Sarah Vermeulen.
Alliance Musicale Luxembourg continues its work to document and understand the professional music sector. Building on its first survey in 2025, this second edition explores members’ economic contribution and role in employment, while also highlighting the breadth of their musical programming and educational activities.
Conducted between April and August 2026 with cultural statistics and economics specialist Philippe Robin, the survey draws on data from 2025. It forms part of Alliance Musicale’s commitment to developing a lasting basis for understanding, recognising and supporting Luxembourg’s professional music sector.
Music on stage, in schools and beyond
In 2025, participating organisations organised 1,200 musical events, including more than 1,100 concerts and recitals. Fifteen respondents also delivered 455 music education activities, primarily aimed at young audiences.
These educational activities ranged from workshops and school performances to open rehearsals. They illustrate how member organisations combine artistic programming with opportunities to discover music, learn and meet artists.
This breadth of activity is characteristic of the respondents: more than two-thirds carry out several activities within music, combining work such as concert organisation, festivals, outreach and education. Together, these activities show the many ways in which professional music organisations contribute to cultural life.
The people and resources behind the programme
Delivering this work involves employees, independent professionals and volunteers. Participating organisations reported 274 direct jobs, equivalent to approximately 256 full-time positions, and mobilised 1,077 volunteers during 2025.
Their activities also involve substantial spending across the economy. Respondents reported €76.5 million in expenditure, of which 59% was spent in Luxembourg, supporting suppliers and service providers in areas including the arts, commerce, technical services and hospitality.
Total revenue amounted to nearly €85 million, with 61% generated through commercial activities. Public funding accounted for approximately 35%, contributing alongside earned income to the work of participating organisations.
The study estimates their overall contribution to the national economy at €44.8 million in direct and indirect added value. These economic and employment figures cover the full range of respondents’ activities, including those beyond music.
A collective effort to document the sector
33 of the 57 members surveyed participated, representing a response rate of 58%. Participants include non-profit associations, businesses and public institutions across Alliance Musicale’s five professional groups: Creators, Festivals/Promoters, Performers, Stages and Supporting Professions.
Their contributions help build a fuller picture of the organisations working across Luxembourg’s music ecosystem. By bringing economic data together with information on programming and education, this second edition documents both the resources supporting their work and the activities they deliver for audiences.
Through this ongoing research, Alliance Musicale provides a basis for dialogue with public and professional partners, supporting the recognition, development and visibility of Luxembourg’s professional music sector.
