Alliance Musicale presents the first results of its statistical survey on Luxembourg’s professional music sector

It’s no secret: music is more than just artistic expression – it is a cornerstone of social life. It connects people, shapes identities, transmits knowledge, and contributes measurably to the economy. This is confirmed by a new survey conducted by Alliance Musicale Luxembourg in spring 2025, launched as a pilot project among its members.

Just two months after the Ministry of Culture released the findings of its study on cultural participation in Luxembourg, Alliance Musicale follows suit – offering a detailed portrait of a sector that is artistically active, structurally diverse, and economically significant.

The study also aims to demonstrate that the music sector cannot be compared to conventional economic branches. Its impact on society goes far beyond financial indicators.

A diverse sector in the service of the common good

Alliance Musicale, the national federation of professional music structures in Luxembourg, brings together its members within five professional groups: Stages, Festivals/Promoters, Performers, Creators, and Supporting Professions.

The survey is based on economic data from the year 2023 and was completed by 38 of the 57 member organisations. It was carried out in collaboration with cultural statistics expert Philippe Robin.

While it does not claim to provide a complete quantitative picture of the sector, the survey delivers valuable insight into how these organisations operate – and lays the groundwork for a long-term process of self-assessment within the field. It also seeks to position music as a fully-fledged economic sector, without overlooking its cultural and societal significance.

“We didn’t just want to collect data – we wanted to raise awareness: the music sector is part of the economy, but it is also so much more.”
— Luka Heindrichs, President of Alliance Musicale Luxembourg

Key figures from the report:

  • Over €60 million in expenditures in 2023, with 64 % spent within Luxembourg

  • €59.2 million in revenues, 55 % of which from commercial activities

  • €45 million total economic contribution, including €8.1 million in tax revenue

  • 68 % of member organisations are employers, and 96 % of employees are salaried

  • Over 900 volunteers engaged across the respondent organisations

  • Only 3 % of revenues stem from sponsorship or philanthropic support

A pilot project with long-term perspective

Alliance Musicale sees this survey as a first step. It provides a foundation for constructive dialogue with cultural and political stakeholders, and contributes to the long-term development of the music sector – as an artistic, economic, and social force. Further studies and follow-up work are already planned.
